Bracketology March 7, 2011

Not a ton of games today, but there were some key finals.

Ohio State put a pounding on Wisconsin and most likely is locked into a number one seed.

Kentucky finally won a road game at Tennessee, and has put the Vols alot closer to bubble. The good news is, the Vols still have alot of key victories and given the weakness of the bubble, that will help them on selection sunday. I still think they’re going to get in, even with a first round loss in Atlanta, but they are treading mucky waters right now. Kentucky helped their case for a top five seed, and that could improve by a strong showing this week.

VCU upset George Mason and put alot of bubble teams in jeopardy if they can win the CAA title. Old Dominion won their semifinal today and move on to face VCU. Every bubble team should root for a ODU victory because George Mason and ODU are locks anyway.

BC took care of business against Wake Forest and will move on the ACC tournament now as the five seed. Unfortunately they’ll have to face Wake Forest again on Thursday with a chance to face Clemson on Friday. The Eagles are probably in as long as they take care of Wake Forest again.  The  potential BC-Clemson matchup could be a bubble knockout game, but the winner will be a lock, and the loser will be right on the edge on selection sunday.

Penn State beat Minnesota to finish 9-9 in the Big Ten and stay barely alive in their hopes of a bid. The Nittany Lions have alot of work to do in the Big Ten Tournament. Minnesota, on the other hand is pretty much done. They have been so bad lately, falling apart down the stretch.

Indiana State upset Missouri State in the MVC final to punch their ticket to the dance. Missouri State is assured now of playing in the NIT because their resume really has nothing to lean on.

Florida State has moved into lock status by winning at NC State this evening. The Noles were extremely close to locking up a bid for a while now but hadn’t quite captured it yet. Now the Noles will be definitely be dancing.

Florida State locked up a bid today with their road win at NC State, but they are still without their star Chris Singleton

St. Mary’s took care of business as well today and advanced to the finals of the WCC. Gonzaga also took care of San Francisco and will take on the Gaels for the title and an assured spot in the tournament, while the loser will have to sweat out selection sunday.

On a final note, I couldn’t help put take Georgia and Tennessee off of lock status…I just don’t feel 100 percent sure they will make it. I reviewed their resumes and they weren’t as impressive as I had previously remembered, especially Georgia. Georgia has no bad losses (Alabama was their worst), but they don’t have much in the way of wins.
