Moving Forward
I couldn’t be happier with the Giants after yesterday’s preseason beatdown against the Bears. The offense improved immensely after their debocle against Carolina last week. Perry Fewell’s defense was unstoppable. Unfortunately, this game felt like a devastating loss after discovering the severity of Terrell Thomas’ injury. With a torn ACL, Thomas is likely to miss the entire season. This is a huge blow given Terrell was the Giants’ best defensive back last season. Plus, this was going to be Thomas’ final year in his contract. The Giants were looking forward to a fantastic season for the fourth year pro. Now we cry about all the Giants’ injuries this month (cry me a fuck’n river NY Post). Or we can move forward…
I believe the Giants’ secondary is still strong, but only if they don’t lose any other cornerbacks. Veteran Aaron Ross is set to replace Terrell Thomas, so that should fill that void. But there’s a huge drop off when it comes to the second string – Michael Coe and Joe Burnett…ouch. The Giants need to bring in some depth, so I believe they need to sign a veteran cornerback this week. I’ve heard rumors about former Colts’ cornerback Kelvin Hayden signing with the Giants. This would be a fantastic pickup. Hayden has been a starter for the past four seasons and has put up some impressive numbers. However, he has been nagged by injuries for the last three years. Personally, I think the Giants should look to sign Lito Sheppard. I am happy to hear that the Giants are actually going to work out Lito tomorrow. Unlike Hayden, Sheppard is willing to sign for the veteran minimum. Given the Giants don’t have too much cap space, this could be a match made in heaven.
With the quiet offseason, numerous injuries and lost free agents, it seems that every one has quickly jumped off the Giants bandwagon. The last time the Giants had this quiet of an offseason was 2007. So I’m not too worried about that. Personally, I think the Giants are in a good situation to begin the season. The defense is still strong, Bradshaw and Jacobs look great, and Eli looks primed and confident to have another great year. In the NFL, it’s great to head into the season in a quiet manner. From what I saw on the sidelines last night, it looks like this Giants team is more of a family now than ever. Since everyone has doubted them, they’ve come together to prove themselves. Now let’s all pray for no more injuries the next two weeks.
