Opening Day vs. Detroit this Thursday

It’s official – I’m pumped for Opening Day. Right now I’m watching Doc Gooden’s No-Hitter on ESPN Classic here in my hotel room in Tallahassee, Florida. Watching guys like Paul O’Neill, Bernie Williams, and Tino Martinez gives me a deep nostalgia for Yankees baseball in the 90’s. But that doesn’t mean I’m excited for our Yankees team this up-coming season.

This morning the Yankees announced that pitchers Ivan Nova and Freddy Garcia will be the #4 and #5 starters in the rotation. I can’t disagree with this decision, but I would’ve like to see Bartolo Colon get an opportunity. He pitched great all spring and he might have some good games left in the tank. Yesterday, the Yanks also signed Kevin Millwood. Like I said a couple of months ago, this is the right move. Unlike picking up a guy like Mark Prior, Millwood actually had a solid big league season last year. Yea I know he went 4-16, but he didn’t receive any run support in Baltimore. Millwood will likely start the season in Triple-A Scranton. If he doesn’t make the big league roster by May 1, he has to the option to opt out of his contract. I’m also happy to see Eric Chavez continue to sizzle as Spring Training comes to an end. The guy has had a hot bat since the first day of Spring. He has clearly locked up his roster spot as a back-up infielder.

So for this baseball season, we will heavily cover the Yanks well throughout the summer here at 5 Borough. (We will have some Mets’ articles as well). Don’t expect to have every game recapped and analyzed, but there will be plenty of posts written about our boys’ in the Bronx.
