Hottest Team in New York

I can’t remember the last time the Isles played this well. Maybe 2002? This team is on fire. Last night’s game just shows how good the Islanders can be if they’re running on all cylinders. Al Montoya looked like a top 5 goaltender, Frans Nielsen continued to prove that he’s the most underrated player in the league and Grabner couldn’t be stopped. The Islanders have gained at least one point in 10 of their last 11 games. Lately, there’s been talk about what to do with head coach Jack Capuano next season. Even though he’s coaching on an interim basis, he has to stay. I’ve never seen the Isles respond this well to a coach since Peter Laviolette. After taking over during the worst time of the season, Capuano has revived this franchise and has put this team in a position where they have a chance to get back to .500 hockey. Plus, Capuano has coached most of these guys already in Bridgeport. The Islanders’ roster has a number of former Sound Tigers who have grown up with Capuano as their coach (Bailey, Okposo, McDonald, Hillen, Nielsen and many more). Capuano must stay.

The Islanders have eight games remaining this season. If the Isles keep up this play, the Islanders could land their highest point total since the 2006-2007 season. I’m hoping for 82-85 points and possibly a .500 finish. If the Islanders finish .500, I would officially call this season a success, given their horrendous start (rememeber that the Islanders were 5-18-5 in early December). Islanders take on the Thrashers tomorrow night at the Coliseum.

Here’s one of the five Islanders’ goals last night:
