FINAL BRACKETOLOGY – SUNDAY MARCH 13th, 2011
The final day of competition only featured 4 games. The most important for bracket implications was the Richmond-Dayton matchup. The Spiders handled Dayton and got the automatic bid, but more importantly prevented a team from stealing a bid.
Duke beatdown UNC for the ACC championship and after so long thought about it, I’ve moved the Blue Devils to a one seed. UNC remains a 2 seed.
Florida got beatdown by Kentucky as well and both of these teams will be looking at 3 seeds in my opinion.
The final game was Ohio State and Penn State and Ohio State leads big time in the second half, so no more changes to the bracket.
OK, so the final bracket came down to one comparison for me.

When you review the numbers, Georgia has a much better RPI and hasn’t lost to any bad teams. USC holds a few better wins but have a plethora of bad losses.
Both teams went to Tennessee and won, while USC got a big home win over Texas, while Georgia got one over Kentucky. Additionally a home win over Arizona and a road win at Washington for USC, while Georgia got a home win over UAB.
USC does have a few more good wins, but the difference is not enough to overcome the absolutely horrible losses. Losing at home to Rider and Oregon is bad enough, but then losing to three sub 200 teams, including a MVC cellar dweller Bradley on a neutral court. USC proved they can upset teams at home, and get upset. On the road and on a neutral court they seem to be a much worse than at home, while Georgia isn’t getting big wins on the road, they are getting wins. In the end this was a very hard decision, but I eventually decided on Georgia over USC by the slimmest of margins. Of course I could be wrong here, and Alabama is also very unstable, but they did beat Georgia twice, so the Dawgs have to go first in that case.
St. Mary’s is a team I better not see in the field. Joe Lunardi has been high on them and it does not make sense. They’ve been getting worse and only hold twice wins of any note whatsoever. Just can’t validate them, especially over team more in the field like Illinois, Colorado, Clemson and Virginia Tech.
That is it for this year of Bracketology, but that doesn’t mean we’re done covering college hoops. Look for a summary of the brackets and our thoughts on what the committee got right and wrong.
Then look for tournament predictions!
Teams that aren’t absolutely guarenteed a bid, but I’d be very upset if they aren’t in the bracket tomorrow, AKA they’d be ROBBED:
Michigan State, Colorado, Penn State, Illinois, Michigan, Tennessee, Richmond, Clemson, Virginia Tech
Teams that are on the bubble for the absolute last seeds, (only two can go):
Georgia, Alabama, USC, Boston College, St. Mary’s
Teams that maybe could sneak in but I’d be surprised at this point:
UTEP, UAB, Harvard, VCU, Washington State
