Paradise.
Many of you in the next couple of weeks will enjoy your Spring Break down in Mexico, Dominican Republic, or any of those other Caribbean places. Instead, I chose to visit my own paradise – the Nassau Coliseum. With one of the best seats in the house, I watched a phenomenal Islanders game tonight. The Toronto Maple Leafs were in town and the Isles were looking to extend their point streak to five games. With a rare goal by Zenon Konopka and a pair of goals from Michael Grabner and Frans Nielson, the Islanders found themselves tied 3-3 with Toronto at the end of regulation. In overtime with only 58 seconds to go, Isles’ forward Blake Comeau redirected Radek Martinek’s shot right past Leafs’ goalie James Reimer for the game winner. Luckily, my seats were behind that net during this goal. Just another great Isles’ win at the Coliseum.
Nothing is better in hockey than watching a game at the Coliseum. People always talk about how the Islanders need to get a new arena because the Coliseum is a dump. If you haven’t been there and you’re a hockey fan, you have to go. Unlike all of those fancy new arenas around the league, the Islanders allow the fans to get close to the players. Security guards allow fans to roam all around the stadium during pre-game. They even let fans get right in front of the glass during warm-ups. At the Garden, I can’t even go 15 rows behind the ice if I don’t have a first section ticket. Given there are very few fans at Islanders game (just under 10,000 tonight), all areas of the Coliseum are accessible for all fans. So now as I head back south, my season of attending Islanders games comes to an end (the only way I can see an Islanders game again this season is if they miraculously go deep into the postseason). So just like the rest of you guys on vacation who will head back to reality in a couple of days, I will soon head back to only watching the Isles on atdhe.me and the occasional Versus channel. The Isles host the Bruins on Friday at 7pm.
