Bracketology – March 3rd, 2011
The most eventful day of college hoops since Saturday and there are many games to go over since my last bracketology.
Monday Gonzaga took care of business and stayed on the right side of the bubble and Kansas State moved themselves to lock status by beating Texas on the road.
On Tuesday Alabama got completely smacked down by Florida and moved further off the bubble. If they lose to Georgia this weekend at home, then the Crimson Tide will probably need to win the SEC Tournament, or atleast make the finals. (which they will not, I promise you)
Penn State lost its chance for a big win when they got soundly beaten by Ohio State. The Nittany Lions are not in good shape and will need a deep run, perhaps a Big Ten Title to make the field.
Purdue continued their quiet run by downing Illinois. Purdue is now in shape to grad a 1 or 2 seed, while Illinois remains in decent shape for now, but must beat Indiana this weekend.
Oklahoma State beat Baylor, and the Bears moved back in the wrong direction after their win over Texas A&M this past weekend. Baylor is out for now but has a shot at Texas this weekend at home with Gameday coming to town.
Boston College gave Virginia Tech a pretty good beatdown at home after their big on Saturday. The Eagles are in for now and need to take care of Wake this weekend and their first round game in the ACC tourney. The Hokies are still in but still face a tough Clemson team on the road Saturday. With a loss there they should start sweating and might need one more win (maybe in the ACC tourney) to comfort themselves .
Wednesday night was wild…
Michigan State took care of Iowa and should feel pretty good about their chances even with a loss this weekend to Michigan.
Memphis took a huge blow by losing at East Carolina tonight. The Tigers are now out and will probably need a deep run or more likely a CUSA title to dance this year.
On the other hand, UAB picked up a nice win at Southern Miss tonight, and should feel better about their at-large chances now. The Blazers have a pretty good resume and if they can avoid an bad losses, they have a good chance of dancing. Southern Miss though, is probably going to need that title now like Memphis.
Dayton ended all hope by losing at home to St. Louis, they’ll need to win the A10.
Maryland took a huge blow tonight losing to Miami and will likely need to go deep in the ACC tourney or go all the way as well.

Richmond took care of St. Joe’s and remain in decent shape on the right side of the bubble. They need to avoid bad losses like UAB, but if they do they’ll make it.
Oh Colorado, yep you did it, you blew it. The Buffs got the big win and then flopped. Iowa State has now taken the NCAA tournament away from Nebraska and Colorado after they lost 12 in a row. Colorado isn’t done yet, but need to pick up another big win to make us forget about that ugly loss.
Georgia took care of LSU and are pretty much a lock now. Mississippi lost at Auburn and ended any chance of a late run at a bid.
Northwestern beat up Minnesota and the Gophers are continuing their horrible slide. Its hard to argue for them now and that Big Ten record is basically too much to overcome. It doesn’t look like they have anything left and will be NIT bound.
UTEP beat Marshall and kept hope alive, but they will likely need to run deep into the CUSA tournament too, though for now I have them ahead of Memphis.
Colorado State beat Utah at home and avoided peril. The Rams are still out but not done. If they can pick up a win against one of the top three in the Mountain West, then they could earn an atlarge bid still.
New Mexico came out of nowhere to beat BYU on the road to complete the season sweep, but they likely will need to win the MWC still. They are under 500 and lack enough big wins to overcome some bad losses.
Clemson traveled to Duke tonight and was unable to accomplish the miracle upset of the Blue Devils on senior night. Clemson played quite well though, and got the wrong end of some home cooking refereeing. With all the bad losses that happen tonight, the Tigers didn’t lose ground nor gain it. For now they are still in, but they have to win at home against Virginia Tech on Saturday and then win a game or two in the ACC tournament.
