Knicks Improve Offer for Carmelo

(Yahoo Sports) The New York Knicks have improved their offer to land Carmelo Anthony, proposing a deal that could give the Denver Nuggets three potential starters for their All-Star forward, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The Knicks offered a choice of forward Danilo Gallinari or rookie guard Landry Fields on Friday, and Denver officials preferred Gallinari, a source with knowledge of the talks said. The proposed deal would send Gallinari, point guard Raymond Felton, forward Wilson Chandler, Eddy Curry’s expiring contract and a first-round pick to the Nuggets for Anthony, point guard Chauncey Billups, Renaldo Balkman and Shelden Williams.

Ouch. So I guess the Knicks have no choice in giving up three starters for Carmelo and Billups. If Denver approves the trade, let’s see how the Knicks will look for the rest of the season. At the point, they will have the 34 year-old Chauncey Billups. This season, Billups is averaging 17 PPG and has been a reliable player his entire career. Having said that, I would rather have Felton control the point, but Billups would do just fine. Now depending on who the Nuggets choose to take in the trade, the Knicks could have Landry Fields or Bill Walker at the two spot. If the Nuggets take Gallinari, then obviously the Knicks would have Landry start at shooting guard. Carmelo would be at the three spot…boom. Amare would stay at the four, and Mozgov at the five.

If the Nuggets choose Gallinari, this is the starting five the Knicks are looking at:

PG: Chauncey Billups

SG: Landry Fields

SF: Carmelo Anthony

PF: Amare Stoudemire

C: Timofey Mozgov

If the Nuggets choose Fields, here’s the possible lineup:

PG: Chauncey Billups

SG: Bill Walker / Toney Douglas

SF: Danilo Gallinari

SF: Carmelo Anthony

PF: Amare Stoudemire

(Gallinari could be used as 6th man with Turiaf or Mozgov starting instead)

Now if this trade goes through, let’s make sure to remember the passion and effort Wilson Chandler brought to this franchise. During a dark time for the Knicks, Chandler played his heart out. As the possibily of him being traded becomes more of a reality, let’s bid our farewell to a great Knick. But let’s also welcome back Renaldo Balkman! Gotta admit, not the biggest Balkman fan. Only thing he did to contribute was a rock some great hair on the bench. More on the trade as the Carmelo talks develop.
